ARTICLE: What Puts The Magic In Your Animal's Bath
by Jill Mari Embry Inventor of The Magician Curry Wash

August 2009 Newsletter

One of the most frequent questions I am asked, as the inventor of The Magician Curry Wash, is "How did you come up with the idea?" I owe it all to my Norwegian Elkhound, Charlie. Up until four and a half years ago, I had never had to bathe a dog before. I traveled frequently, as a biomedical engineer, so Charlie would go to the kennel and when I came home, they would give me back a clean dog. When I moved out to the country, Charlie got to run in the fields and woods, roll in the mud and manure (cow and horse), and also roll in any dead critter he happened upon. After a day of play, Charlie would come to the door for the night looking like a pig, with all coloring in his coat hidden. And boy was he happy.

When I first saw him like this, I was not overly concerned. My thought was, “How hard can it be to wash a dog. I wash horses all the time. Charlie is only 55 lbs.” OH MY! What a nightmare. It started with me trying to hold Charlie and hose him down. After having him wrap the leash, and himself around my legs so that I ended up on the wet ground, my next course of action was to tie him to the deck. When ever I would get him wet enough to get the shampoo on him, when I reached for the shampoo he would shake. I would have a handful of useless shampoo and a dry dog. Eventually I would be able to get the top of him wet, and would lather that up. Then came the rinsing. I spent more time rinsing me than I did him. At the end of his bath, some 20 plus painful minutes later, I still had a dirty stinky dog. I was soaked. There was stringy, hair everywhere, on me, the carpet, on him, everywhere. And neither one of us was happy. After going through that once, I went inside initially looked on the internet for a tool to help me. After I was unable to find the right combination of features, I drew out the first version of The Magician Curry Wash.

My initial requirements for design were very simple;
First of all, it could not be a spray system. The primary reason I was soaked was that the jet of water coming out of the hose was obviously a monster in Charlie's mind. It was not that Charlie didn't like getting wet. The pond was always his first stop before the manure, dirt, etc. Now I can bath Charlie, holding him with one hand and bathing him, with complete control, with the other.

Secondly, it had to be able to use any shampoo. With horses and dogs, the ability to switch from a flea and tick shampoo to a medicated horse shampoo, to a conditioning shampoo. It is problematic if I run out of shampoo that is required by a manufacture's specific pet or horse bathing system since the nearest store is at least 45 minutes away. Now, I have the freedom of choice to use what I want and have on hand.

The third criteria had to address the hair. It wasn't the stringy wet hair that stuck to my fingers while bathing Charlie that was the issue. The major problem was that after bathing him there was hair everywhere. To dogs, it seems the best way to dry off, even if you towel them off, is to do the carpet and furniture rub dance. This, not to mention that when Charlie dried he looked like a bad tapestry, with tufts and strings of hair hanging off of his entire body was definitely a cleaning nightmare.

All these criteria were addressed with The Magician Curry Wash. After using it, several other advantages have come out:

USE YOUR FAVORITE SHAMPOO: Works with most standard shampoos on the market. I prefer the all natural shampoos. Adjust the suds/rinse dial, not opening it as much for thinners shampoos.

DECREASE SHEDDING: Whether it's the horses or the dogs, long or short haired, when they are bathed with The Magician Curry Wash, all the loose hair is gone when you're done. Of course you must curry them while bathing. This makes grooming afterwards so much quicker and easier. Over time, I have found that I have less shedding on all my animals.

MASSAGE: What a relaxing way to give a bath.

CURRY DEEP DOWN: When you wash away loose hair, dead skin and dirt the grooming is much easier for some time after a bath. The dirt that is trapped in the coat is pushed up, out and off in the flow of water. The effect is seen the most on light colored horses. When normally dirt gets trapped in the coat and eventually surfaces after a bath. NO MORE GLOBS OF SHAMPOO IN THE COAT: Evenly distribute shampoo into the coat. It's diluted so it's easy to rinse out. There's no more concern of leaving residual shampoo in the coat. Rinsing is easy and quick.

NO WASTED SHAMPOO or WATER: Since you don't use more shampoo than you need, and you don't waste shampoo by putting it in you hand only to have your dog shake, you use less. The water you use is the water it takes to curry your horse twice, once on suds and once on rinse.

STAY DRY WHILE BATHING YOUR PET: Keeping the curry wash against the pet keeps you dry while they get clean.

NO MORE RUNNING FROM THE JET: Put the curry wash against the coat and turn it on. That way your pet isn't scared by the blast of the jet of water, and you have more control. None of my animals run from the hose anymore.

SHORT, MEDIUM AND LONG COATS: Comes with three curry heads for different coat lengths.
Long tooth curry for thick coats and on horse's mains and tails,
Medium tooth curry for the sensitive thin skinned animals,
Small tooth curry works great on summer coats of horses, short coated animals and on the face.

USE THE SAME SYSTEM ON ALL YOUR ANIMALS: Customers have bought the curry wash for their dogs, horses, llamas, cows, sheep and goats. SPOT BATH: After a bath, rolling on a dead animal doesn't require another bath. When just a small area need to be cleaned, you can easily just spot clean with The Magician Curry Wash.
