ARTICLE: Supporting The Immune System

November 2009 Newsletter

The immune system is designed to protect a horse from invading pathogens and keep their body healthy. Stress, improper nutrition, over exertion from physical exercise, travel and exposure to other animals and age are factors that can take it's toll on the health of the immune system. If proper feeding and absorption of nutrients is not in balance, the immune system may be compromised and the risk of contracting a disease increases.

It makes much sense to focus on prevention and supporting the immune system vs.. the other option of fending off the illnesses once they have been able to take hold.

As any animal ages, the body becomes weaker, and the immune system may be less equipped to fend off illnesses. Invasive pathogens like parasites, bacteria, and viruses can attack the immune. In order to protect your horse from these health risks, it is important to keep their immune system healthy and support them with nutrients like antioxidants, minerals and fiber.

With the cold weather approaching it is important to supplement with Vitamin C products that contain anti-oxidants including flavonoids like Quercetin.. Our horses also need the occasional boost and there are a number of products with immune-stimulating promises on the market. You are being responsible by working with your vet and nutritionist to develop a program that includes the proper balance of exercise and nutritional support to help protect your animal. Supplements are often needed to complete your program and ensure the maximum support for your animals. As with people all of our animals are different and require different programs in place. Herbs have been known to have positive effects upon the body and make sense to use since horses are herbivores and their digestive tract is built to process and absorb the plants they forage.
